Remember back in March when I introduced you to the ‘Cinderella High-Heel Church,’ located in Budai, Chiayi County? Well, seeing we were in the area, we decided to also check out these 3D art murals on that Sunday as well.

The Murals

This collection of 3D murals are located near a couple of pretty nice temples and are scattered here and there around several alleyways. Most seem to have an ‘under the sea’ theme while some focus on Snow White, with the Hulk and an Old Man thrown in for good measure [his name skips my mind at the moment – please help me out here.]

I give myself a big pat on the back because, although the place was swarming with Taiwanese day trippers at that particular time, I managed to get several pictures without anybody blocking the view of the murals. Mind you, it took a lot waiting around in the sun and a lot of patience with the camera on standby to click the shutter button at the right time [as one person moved away and before the next one took position.]

Also, can you believe that the most unpopular image there was the dragon below? Personally, I think it is the coolest one among the bunch and yet, most people walked right passed it. I guess different strokes for different folks.

And during our time there, I found myself looking up most of the time, admiring the details of the temples. Plus, I ended up buying the cutest baby bodysuits there from a roadside stand – totally random, I know.

Directions

Like I said above, the murals are located in Budai, Chiayi County. We parked neared Chiayi Hao Mei Elementary School [嘉義好美國小 in Chinese] which is just meters away from some of the murals. I suggest entering the school name into Google Maps and letting that guide the way.

  1. Such stunning photos of the 3D murals, Constance. Good work under the hot sun and with the crowds. The murals really do look life like, and the fishes and dolpin almost seem to be jumping out! I too think the dragon one if very cool. The artist did a great job of making it look menacing I must say, and maybe some were scared to get close 😀 Also, I think the Snow White was made out to be a bit more sexualised than usual…

I have never actually really taken much interest in street art. That was until I met fellow blogger Lisa Dorenfest in Melbourne earlier this year. She is a great street art photographer and en route to our dinner, we took a few photos of street art together. It was so nice to see her focusing on each piece of street art with her camera – each piece of art is a story. Now I have a newfound admiration for street art 🙂

  2. Are you kidding? The dragon is the best! Although, after seeing all of your dragon photos, maybe Taiwan is bored with dragons. Low-cut Snow White must be more of a novelty (A TACKY ONE).

  3. You said some of these murals are meters away from the school. I’m not sure if some of the murals are appropriately placed,
    so near to a school.

I do like street art but we don’t have any, not that I know of in this S.W part of Turkey.

Art is not a career a Turk would normally take up according to the many young people I talk to. One would be look down upon. This view may not be endorsed in other bigger Turkish cities

  4. What the… that dragon is AWESOME!! How can people not notice it??

Is that Old Man supposed to be a famous folklore character? The only ones that come to mind are Zeus and the giant in Jack and the Beanstalk. :/
