Baby Daze & Life Lately

It was hard to come up with a suitable title for this post, so ‘Baby Daze’ will have to suffice as it kind of summarizes what I am feeling these days.

Less than 10 Weeks to Go!

It is now week 31 of my pregnancy and I can feel that I nearing the home stretch. With 64 days to go [not like I am counting or anything], I am finally seeing the light at end of the tunnel. I remember looking forward to this time when I found out in November and it seemed so far away, but it is now here and it is not as hard as I had envisioned it to be [knock on wood that it remains that way.] I mean, yes, I have aches and pains in places that I never thought possible and yes, the baby wakes me up kicking and punching, but there is an immense joy to it all that is hard to explain and put into words.

In all honesty, I think the severe morning sickness, day in and day out during the first trimester, mentally prepared me for the worst and that is why it is not so hard these days. Also, my husband has been picking up the slack and doing my chores around the house as well as his own, so I can rest more – yes, he brings new meaning to the word ‘awesomeness.’

Sorry, but not Sorry!

I know I have been neglecting my blog again lately, but we have been full steam ahead preparing the nursery and buying everything we need for our little guy when he arrives. I still can’t believe how tiny the clothes are for a newborn – they are just too cute! ♥ ♥

And with most of the baby stuff ready, I have been working on the editing of my memoir. I am going to use these next weeks to my advantage as there won’t be much time for doing this stuff when the baby arrives.

An Apple a Day…

apparently equates to whiter skin!?!?

Yes, I am eating an apple a day, which I am sure would put a smile on my Taiwanese mother-in-law’s face. According to her and my sister-in-law, if you eat an apple a day, your baby will have whiter skin. Now, of course I don’t believe it, and like my brother-in-law said ‘It is pure nonsense,’ but the apples at Costco are delicious and my absolute favorite!!

Baby Facts!

As for little Baby C, he is now weighing in at 1.32 KG [about 2.9 lbs] – well, he was a little over a week ago and is in the 50th percentile for this age [about average]. His head now measures 7.6 cm from ear to ear [it should be around 9 cm at the 40 week mark.]

He is also very good at playing hide-and-seek. The second last time he had his face covered with his hands and during last appointment, he was doing some serious yoga poses by covering his little face with his feet – leading me to believe that he may be a bit of a show-off like his dad [I know you are laughing when you are reading this, dear husband.]

Some Serious Cravings…!!

I have heard of pregnant woman craving sweet things, crunchy things, sour things, etc. As for my craving of choice, it comes in squares or cubes and the best part about my craving, it has zero calories – yes, I am taking about good old frozen H2O. I have been drinking so much ice water these days, probably enough to form my own little pond. And when our fridge’s ice maker stopped making it last weekend, I went through withdrawal. Luckily, a crisis was adverted when my husband figured out how to fix the problem and had it back up and running and making ice is less than a day.

I guess that is about it for now. I plan to write more posts in the coming weeks and share more pictures. Until then, I hope you enjoyed the photos of the cute baby clothes included in this article! 🙂

        1. Oh, that is nothing compared to his MIL ‘zuo yue zi’ rules. [Zuo Yue Zi = literally means ‘sit for a month after having a baby,’ but it is sooo much more.] I have a whole post written about it that I will publish in the next few months.

          1. I actually kind of like the cultures that send a new mother to bed after giving birth and take care of all the chores around the house. Ideally, she could bond with her baby and rest and not worry about being back at work in two days and/or cooking and cleaning in three. The U.S. puts tremendous pressure on new moms to get back to work/ gym/ parenting immediately, and with little assistance. Which is brutal when you don’t have immediate family to help. 😦

On the other hand, I can see “being helpful” morphing into being overbearing and controlling in certain Chinese families. None that I know personally, of course…HAHAHAHAHA

  1. Very nice to hear that everything is going well, and sounds like your little one will come to a very loving family. Your husband is very supportive, and I am sure the two of you are very much looking forward to meeting him 🙂 I’ve never heard of eating apples and your baby’s skin will become whiter. Then again, apples are fruit and fruit is meant to flush out toxins from the body so overall, you and your baby will be healthier 🙂

Good luck editing your memoir these few weeks. I am sure once your family is all settled down, you will have another chance to work on it again 🙂

    1. I have heard many Taiwanese superstitions and taboos surrounding pregnancy from my friends here. Most, however, involve ‘zuo yue zi,’ which the mother follows a set of rules for a month after childbirth.

I am indeed very fortunate to have such an amazing and supportive husband. He has made things so much easier.

It is getting close now and we are looking forward to meeting him.

  2. Was looking so much forward to a new post, was getting worried there since the last one is some time ago!
Wow, you know weight and some measurements? Didn’t know that was possible as e got in Finland just the pictures and about total size twice during pregnancy.

    1. I am not sure if it like this everywhere, but my doctor always takes measurements of the head [from ear to ear], of the femur and fibula, and a few more measurements during each appointment. From these measurements, they calculate the weight. I have gotten pictures from each appointment so far. Some are better than others [depending on his position.] I have another one this week, so hopefully he will be co-operative.

  3. I’m glad to read everything’s going fine! And I have no experience, but I think you have more than enough clothes! They are very cute but babies grow very fast, right?

Btw, I’m sure there has to be some belief against drinking ice water for pregnant ladies in China. Cold drinks are always the devil here!

    1. Yes, you are right. Babies grow very fast and I have enough clothes for the entire first year now [actually, that is the exact same thing my husband has been telling me for weeks now]

I am sure they have the same belief about ice water here in Taiwan.

  4. No worries, I would be shocked if you are able to keep up a blogging schedule with pregnancy going on.

LOL! Iced water, is that fine with your in-laws? I see my pregnant friends all stay away from cold and icy stuff like the plague! It is probably same what your brother in law says about apples though. I think end of the day, if the doctor says it is ok, you feel ok, and it makes you happy, then that’s plenty good.

    1. Actually, my in-laws haven’t even mentioned it. As for my mother-in-law, she was too busy telling me that I should have another baby when the whole family was together for Tomb Sweeping Day, so she probably didn’t even notice I was drinking ice water.

  5. Only 10 (saw the comments, so 9 more weeks?) that’s so soon! 😀 I’m super excited. I showed Derek this post and he thought the apple thing was hilarious. Funny thing is, I love apples so I would most likely end up eating more than one apple a day. I could be wrong, but my mom told me that when she was pregnant with me, she craved ice too and it was due to an iron deficiency. Have you had your iron levels checked out? I tend to crave ice too sometimes and usually then I need some extra iron (the joys of being vegan). PS: I love the clothes!

    1. I think I should be ok – I am taking prenatal vitamins along with eating a well-balanced diet. I have always loved drinking/eating cold stuff anyway.

Yes, the apple things is certainly kind of far-fetched, but I have heard some other pretty crazy ones here as well. Like I told another commenter, my Canadian friend told me that his Taiwanese MIL wouldn’t let his wife/her daughter eat papaya or any yellow fruit when she was pregnant as it would lead to jaundice.

  6. I remember this time. I was so excited to meet our little one, more like impatient. And buying all the adorable clothes, yes I remember that too. My cravings were whole cucumbers (my coworkers thought I was nuts), oranges, grapes and also apples! Gosh, you’re almost there, yeah better work on that memoir before little one gets there. So excited for you!

    1. Yes, it is so close now that I kind of want to get this show on the road.

As for your cravings – I get fruit, but cucumbers is a very strange to crave. 🙂

And I really need to use these last weeks to work on my memoir. I have a feeling that he will keep me busy when he makes his grand entrance. However, I have a feeling that time will fly by. I still can’t believe your son is already one.

      1. You will be busy, don’t underestimate it. In the beginning it was a bit hard for me to accept I didn’t have time for anything else but tend to Babel’s needs. I was also exclusively breastfeeding on demand for 6 months, so I always needed to be with him and no one else could take over feeding him (my expressed milk didn’t keep in the fridge). So yeah I was busy with Babel, still am.

I love to be creative and make things from felt or design sewing patterns on the computer. This is where all my free time went to before Babel was born, but I just couldn’t find the time after he was born. I found myself fantasizing a lot about doing them, which made me unhappy because I couldn’t.

I had to accept that this is just what life is like right now, and there will be a time in the future when I will have time for my hobbies again. Babel is only this small once, right now! I’d better enjoy it! I fully gave myself and my time to Babel, and it’s been flying by. He’s the best thing I ever created and he gets better and funner everyday! And he’s already one, what?!?!
