Taiwanese Love ‘Cute’

Like I said in a previous post, Taiwanese love cute things and after living in Taiwan for more than 15 years, I sometimes tend to gravitate towards certain things that are cute and adorable as well. Now, you won’t see me sporting Hello Kitty T-shirts or wearing pretty bows in my hair, but I don’t mind photographing cute or ‘hao ke ai’ things – for example, the cute bears that are currently on display in Taichung.

2014 Teddy Bear Lohas Carnival in Taichung, Taiwan

One beautiful day last week, my husband and I took advantage of the sunny weather and went to one of the newest parks in Taichung called Maple Garden (located on Zhong Gang Rd. and within walking distance from Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and Top City Department Stores). The main purpose of our visit was to see the bear exhibits that are currently on display there. NOTE: Apparently, Zhong Gang Rd. has been renamed and is now referred to as Taiwan Boulevard.

The park was pretty crowded for a weekday with several children and their parents snapping pictures of the bears located at different points around the park. There also seemed to be many younger couples taking the time to attend the bear exhibition as well.

Each display has two bears – one larger bear and a smaller one. Most are sponsored by local organizations and businesses around town. Each display has a different, unique, and colorful design.

The bears are on display at many parks and public areas around Taichung. They are scattered around the city so it may take a lot of effort to see them all – however, the two most popular areas are Maple Garden and Calligraphy Greenway (I plan to go to the latter one soon, whenever I have time on a weekday – so watch this space for more bear photos). The 2014 Teddy Bear Lohas Carnival started on November 15th and will continue until January 11th, 2015. Furthermore, like most outdoor exhibits in Taiwan, it is free to attend.

For more information, you can check out this facebook page and while you there, be sure to drop my facebook page as well.

Which bear is your favorite? And have you never attended an outdoor event before?

  1. So cute! I was surprised at how different the designs on the bears turned out! I like how one of the Art Bears has some serious eyebrow action going on, and that Love Bears have their priorities straight: cupcake time! 😀 As for the winter bears… Are they cooking…lobster? 😮
I like the coffee bears too, mainly because they look like they could have been made with chocolate! Mmmm!
This is really neatーI’d love to visit this exhibition one day, but I guess I’ll have to make do with the 2015 (hopefully!) version. 🙂 Until then, I eagerly await part 2 of the bear posts. 🙂

    1. Actually, I didn’t notice the eyebrows on the art bear – thanks for pointing it out because they are very cool! 🙂 No, it is not lobster, it is shrimp. This restaurant sells shrimp cooked with different ‘favors or seasonings’ – chili shrimp, rice wine shrimp, garlic shrimp, etc. I had to asked my husband about this one as I have never been there before – which is understandable since I am allergic to shellfish. However, he says it tastes great!

I am looking forward to going to the other area soon!!

Happy Saturday!! I am enjoying my first noise free day in two months. It is election day in Taiwan today so that means no more loudspeaker trucks. 🙂

      1. Oooh! I prefer shrimp over lobster, so that works for me! 😀 (They seem like too much effort. :P)

Happy Saturday to you too! I’m taking it slow (too slow?? I need to study!) todayーthough elections are nigh again here, nothing in my neighbor yet. Very thankful for that.
Glad to hear it’s quietening down for you! 🙂

        1. Yes, the elections are now over but there have been a few motorcades this morning making their way around the neighborhood to thank the voters. However, the massive fireworks display last night made up for the little inconvenience of two months of noise!! 🙂

  2. I like them all… ❤ I do recall that Taiwanese people love teddy-bears… 🙂 I've noticed the "Ikea" ones, too: they're everywhere… 🙂 We had a cow parade statues last year @ the agronomy school, very funny… 🙂

oceans of inspiration and have a sweet week! 🙂

    1. Wow! A cow parade? That sounds interesting as well as funny. 😉

I love them all as well. I love the imagination that went into some of the bear designs – it is just fantastic.

Hope your weekend is off to an amazing start!! It is a beautiful Saturday morning here and I am looking forward to getting out and about today!

  3. I noticed Taiwan loves cute things! Every time I go there I will check 7-11 and Family Mart to see what promotions they have 😀 (with the points you collect every time you buy something). Last year I got Sponge Bob’s stapler, picture holder and paperclip magnet from Family Mart, haha.

I have seen exhibitions similar to this one in two places: one was in Holland, they had a lot of cows in the streets (statues of cows) painted in different colours. The other one was in Seoul, they had statues of a strange animal that is the symbol of the city. It was very colourful 😀

    1. I know it may sound ironic (considering this is a bear post) but the last promotion I collected was Paddington Bears at the 7-11. I didn’t get to collect them all but I did get most. All the teachers I worked with were swapping extras for ones they didn’t have – it was pure madness! 🙂 I am glad that you got some benefits from shopping at Family Mart!

The cow exhibition sounds interesting! Were they just painted different colors or did they have some design? Was it some sort of promotion?
