“Do Taiwanese celebrate Valentine’s Day?”
“What is Valentine’s Day like in Taiwan?”
I have been asked these questions a lot recently…
And my usual answer usually is ‘ Yes, and it’s not much different from Canada, the U.S., or any other western nation.’
Valentine’s Day in Taiwan
Ah! Love is in the air everywhere this week, including Taiwan! Plans are in motion in the hopes of creating the perfect, most memorable Valentine’s Day ever. Flower displays, with an emphasis on red roses, can be seen all over town. Bookstores make room on their shelves for Valentine’s Day cards containing confessions of love and messages of happiness. Teddy bears, holding hearts with the three little words ‘I Love You,’ can be purchased at certain stores. Pre-wrapped chocolates are sold everywhere, even at convenience stores, for those unfortunate few (or maybe fortunate – they still got a gift) who nearly forgot about the special occasion. Famous Taiwanese theme restaurants are fully booked and are prepared to cater to love struck couples who gaze into each other’s eyes on this special day. Jewelry stores work all marketing angles to increase sales and profit. And there are places where couples can ‘lock’ your love and throw the key away, symbolizing their never-ending love!
Happy Valentine’s Day! May you treat your significant other extra special, not only on February 14th, but every single day!
And for all the single guys and gals out there, don’t give up hope. Your Mr. or Mrs. Right is out there somewhere.
Happy Sweetheart’s Day everyone!!
